Forecasters say the worst affected areas will include northern England and parts of Scotland, with potentially four inches of snow on the way.

Gusts of up to 70mph are set to hammer Britain and Northern Ireland as Storm Barra makes landfall.

Weather warnings remain in place across Ireland, after thousands of people were left without power as wind and rain battered parts of the country for hours on Tuesday.

Many schools, colleges and universities will remain closed today due to the dangerous weather.

The UK is also expected to feel the affects of Storm Barra today.

ScotRail has warned that some Wednesday services will be cancelled due to the storm.

The Environment Agency has issued 11 flood warnings for England at locations including Hartlepool and Sunderland in the North East, and Weymouth in the South, and part of the Cumbrian coast.

Some 66 flood alerts, for areas where flooding is possible, have also been issued across the country.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has sent 11 flood alerts and five warnings for areas in the north-east of Scotland and the south-west.

Natural Resources Wales has also issued 12 flood warnings and 11 alerts, mainly covering coastal areas.

Dublin was one of a number of counties placed under a Status Orange alert by Met Eireann on Tuesday as Storm Barra hit Ireland.

A band of snow is due to whip across the North and Scotland today, with ferocious winds threatening to turn it into a blizzard in the far north.

Some areas could even be hit by tornadoes, the Met Office has warned.

Meteorologists said gaps in the forecasted bands of intense rain and gales could lead to some rotation of weak funnel clouds or tornadoes.

The first early effects of the ferocious Storm Barra have already been felt across the UK and Ireland this morning, with gusty winds and heavy rainfall battering communities already enduring days-long power outages.
